Solána Imani Rowe — known to the world as SZA — was born on November 8, 1989, in Maplewood, New Jersey, and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of a CBS News executive and granddaughter of an Islamic scholar. That duality — spiritual grounding and media sophistication — runs through every note she has ever recorded. SZA spent years as an independent artist before signing to Top Dawg Entertainment, the Compton-based label home to Kendrick Lamar. Her TDE debut EP Z (2014) hinted at a singular voice, but it was her full-length debut Ctrl (2017) that announced the arrival of a transformative talent.
Ctrl was a revelation — a deeply personal, musically adventurous record about vulnerability, desire, self-worth, and Black womanhood that resonated with a generation starving for that kind of honesty. It debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, was certified 8x platinum, and produced the massive singles "The Weekend" and "Love Galore" featuring Travis Scott. Critics placed it among the best albums of the decade, and its influence on the sound of contemporary R&B is impossible to overstate.
SOS (2022) was a supernova. Released in December 2022, it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and spent 10 consecutive weeks there — the longest consecutive run at No. 1 by a female artist since Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998. The album spawned "Kill Bill," "Snooze," and a string of emotionally precise singles that demonstrated artistic ambition most artists never attempt. SZA received nine Grammy nominations for SOS at the 2024 ceremony — the most of any artist that year — winning Best R&B Song for "Snooze." Her collaboration with Kendrick Lamar on "luther" (2024) debuted at No. 1 and became one of the most-streamed songs of the year.
In 2025, SZA released Lana, a companion album to SOS blending shoegaze textures with trap-influenced R&B in ways that defied easy categorization. The album debuted at No. 1 and her SOS Tour played to sold-out arenas globally, featuring production design that drew standing ovations at every stop. Solána Imani Rowe has spent a career turning pain into art and confusion into clarity — and the world cannot get enough.
