Jay Music has built his career on pairing Guatemala's small but growing urban music scene with collaborators far outside it. His latest move brings him alongside Jimmy Bad Boy, one of the founding voices of Spanish language reggae, on a new single called "Contigo."
Jimmy Bad Boy, born Guillermo Rodríguez Álveo in Panama City, released his breakout album "Bailando" in December 2005, a project that carried the title track along with "Si Pudiera Estar Con Ella" and "Barcos en la Bahía" into rotation across Spain and Latin America, according to Wikipedia's entry on the artist. He got his start recording for producer El Chombo before stepping away from music and later returning in 2004 to cut "Bailando," the song that made his name. Jay Music, born to a Guatemalan mother and an Argentine father, has spent the past several years building a catalog of pop reggaeton records, a run that Billboard highlighted in an "On the Radar Latin" feature naming him a rising phenomenon in Guatemala and across the region.

Jay Music Builds on a Pattern of Genre Crossovers
"Contigo" is not Jay Music's first attempt at pairing his sound with an established name from outside reggaeton's usual lanes. Earlier this year, he released a remix of "La Ventanita," a merengue song originally recorded by Dominican star Sergio Vargas in 1992, bringing in Cuban artists Nando Pro and La Companioni to give the song a modern reparto arrangement, as Billboard noted in its coverage of new Latin releases. The release, according to Jay Music's team, reached listeners in Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, the Dominican Republic and the U.S. Hispanic market, though specific streaming totals from the release have not been independently verified.
That track set up "Contigo," which leans into Panamanian reggae and tropical reggaeton rather than merengue. Jay Music said working with Jimmy Bad Boy carries personal weight. "These are the songs I grew up with and that helped me understand my love for music, especially in the urban context, a genre I identify with," he said, referring to the catalog of romantic reggae records that made Jimmy Bad Boy a fixture of the genre for more than two decades.

Jimmy Bad Boy's Catalog Meets a Newer Generation
Jimmy Bad Boy's presence on the track connects two eras of the genre. His run of hits in the mid 2000s helped define reggae en español as a romantic, radio friendly alternative to harder edged reggaeton, and his catalog has continued to circulate on streaming platforms two decades later. His pairing with Jay Music places a newer Central American voice next to one of the genre's established names, a move that mirrors how other younger reggaeton acts have sought out veteran collaborators to widen their reach.
"Contigo" also arrives as part of a larger rollout. Jay Music is preparing his debut studio album, titled "Legacy," which his team says is scheduled for release in late 2026. Details on the album's full tracklist and additional features have not yet been announced.
Whether "Contigo" performs at the level of Jay Music's earlier collaborations remains to be seen. What is clear is that the Guatemalan artist continues to treat features as a strategy, using established names across different corners of Latin music to introduce his sound to new audiences ahead of a debut album that will ultimately have to stand on its own.
