The legendary Colombian musician Carlos Vives will celebrate 30 years of recording with La Provincia in 2023. It all started with a television part that propelled him to fame at the start of the 1990s and was based on the life and work of the renowned Rafael Escalona. After decades of success, he went back to the studio 30 years later to record the lead song for his new album, Escalona: Nunca Se Haba Grabado As. Vives introduces the traditional Vallenato music and a range of nostalgia with "La Historia," the lyrics of which sing of a love that has already passed away.
The release of "La Historia" marks the start of an emotional year filled with events that will make people nostalgic for the 1990s while also highlighting how far Carlos Vives' music has come and the journey he has taken over the past 30 years.
Folklore from the Vallenato region gained a new voice and was given new life by Vives. The songs' TV series renditions are very different from the modern Colombian flavor that Carlos Vives gave "La Provincia." Vives chose to travel to Villanueva, Guajira, where, following an emotional encounter with his friend and compadre Egidio Cuadrado, he set out in quest of the Vallenato dream team. His decision was inspired by the recollection and nostalgia of that period in his life. All the members of "La Provincia" were collected by Vives to work on Dina Luz's prized item, the long-lost notebook of Rafael Escalona.
On the upcoming album, Vives, Cuadrado, and "La Provincia" update Escalona's compositions with a contemporary flair, incorporating the discoveries and sonic associations that were key players in the Colombian music revolution. The team considered how each song should sound in the present day while maintaining its original atmosphere based on Escalona's notes. In order for new generations to discover the maestro's music, like happened in the 1990s with La Gota Fría, Carlos felt it was vital to reinterpret the Escalona sound.
