Grupo Niche's Clásicos 1.0, Led by José Aguirre and Yanila Varela, Draws a GRAMMY Nod

Grupo Niche is back on the GRAMMY ballot, this time with an album built from its own back catalog. The Colombian salsa orchestra has been nominated for Best Tropical Latin Album for Clásicos 1.0, a nomination tied to the 68th Annual GRAMMY Awards. The ceremony is scheduled for February 1, 2026, at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

The nod extends a long run with the Recording Academy. According to the GRAMMY.com artist page, the group has four nominations in the category, with one win. That victory came at the 63rd GRAMMY Awards for the album 40. The earlier nominations were for 35 Aniversario in 2017 and Niche Sinfónico in 2024. The orchestra was founded by Jairo Varela, who died in 2012 at age 62, and Billboard has previously traced the group's 40-year path to its first GRAMMY.

Grupo Niche Rebuilds Its Catalog on Clásicos 1.0

Clásicos 1.0 is a set of re-recordings. According to the release, the album reinvents the group's most recognizable songs with modern arrangements and updated production. The musical direction belongs to José Aguirre. Yanila Varela holds the general direction, and the release credits the two with keeping alive the sound created by Jairo Varela.

The group framed the nomination as a shared achievement. "Every GRAMMY® nomination is a tribute to our history, our discipline, and the love we pour into every note," the group said. It described the album as a gift to listeners. "Clásicos 1.0 is a gift to our audience… to those who grew up with our songs and to the new generations now discovering the magic of salsa," the group said.

The approach is a familiar one in Latin music. Veteran acts revisit their strongest material for a new audience while older listeners hear it with fresh arrangements. The risk is obvious: these songs already live in people's memories. The nomination suggests voters found the updated versions worth recognizing.

Legendary salsa competes crowded Grammy field.

Grupo Niche Faces a Crowded Tropical Field in Los Angeles

The Best Tropical Latin Album category is rarely quiet. Listings of the 2026 field show Clásicos 1.0 competing against Fotografías from Rubén Blades and Roberto Delgado & Orquesta, Raíces from Gloria Estefan, Bingo from Alain Pérez, and Debut y Segunda Tanda, Vol. 2 from Gilberto Santa Rosa. Several of those names have decades of their own behind them.

For Grupo Niche, the category is familiar ground. Its fourth nomination in it comes after a stretch of recognition that also reached the Latin GRAMMYs. According to the group's own site, Niche Sinfónico, recorded with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Colombia, took the Latin GRAMMY in 2023 and earned a GRAMMY nomination the same cycle.

The release also places the orchestra's reach well beyond Colombia, citing more than four decades of history and international acclaim. Those are the group's own claims, but the nomination record on GRAMMY.com supports the broader point: Grupo Niche has stayed in the awards conversation across several album cycles, not just one.

The question now moves to February. A win would make Clásicos 1.0 the group's second trophy in the category and a rare case of a re-recorded catalog beating a field of new material. A loss would still leave a strong argument that salsa's older orchestras are not retreating. They are putting their own history back on the table and asking to be judged on it.
